Let’s get your oily scalp sorted

Who experiences an oily scalp and has trouble dealing with it?? Are you aware of what the contributing factors could be? Here are some natural and alternative tips on encouraging your oily scalp to calm down and not be so over-reactive!

An over-reactive sebaceous gland is a culprit of experiencing an oily scalp.  Meaning the skin on your scalp thinks it is dry, so it is attempting to compensate by giving your skin extra moisture.  Your oil attracts dirt and produces dandruff-causing your hair to stick together.  In the worst cases, your sebum glands can clog your hair roots, which results in hair loss and excessive dandruff.

Oily hair can kill the entire effort a person invests in looking good daily. It is also difficult to style your oily hair. Unfortunately, excessive oil can also lead to skin problems.

So what is the “why” for your oily scalp?

Many factors can be the result of your oily scalp: Inherited genes, hormonal imbalance, humidity, and diet, to name a few. This condition can develop later in life since your hormone levels vary as you age.  Pregnancy, puberty and menopause are moments when your body goes through a hormonal imbalance and can trigger an oily scalp.

How does an oily scalp cause your hair to fall out?

Your skin sheds dead skin cells regularly, and you are always forming new skin cells in all areas on your body.  When this process speeds up, it will produce excessive amounts of dead skin cells with not enough time to shed, which usually results in dandruff.  If poor hygiene is practiced, this condition will worsen, and continued neglect can slowly lead to infection, causing ruff patches to become inflamed and red, itchy and possibly painful—resulting in peeling of your scalp or hair loss.

Here are some suggestions to help manage your oily scalp

There are many ways to help minimize having an oily scalp/greasy hair, including changing how you wash your hair, frequency of washes, and what products you are using.  Try to cut out conditioners that rub onto your scalp, instead, try a leave-in conditioner that you can spray only on the ends of your hair. Cut down on products that spray onto the roots of your hair because these items will cause buildup in your hair.

A quick fix that can help absorb the excess oil that your scalp is producing is dry shampoo.  Most are offered in travel sizes so you can throw a petite size in your purse or satchel to give yourself a touch up in the afternoon.  If you suffer from dandruff, I would not recommend this step.
